Another year of rain, sheep and God

When I set out on this journey 10 weeks ago, I never imaged I’d be here longer than four months. God had other plans and he set a choice before me which would lead to more time in England. Through a series of events, a volunteer position at Capernwray was offered to me for the next school year. I was excited, overwhelmed and scared but God spoke through people to give me peace about the decision. I talked to my parents about it and realized there was no wrong choice – just choices. Ultimately I decided to accept the position and stay at Capernwray. So, I’ll come home in July for 9 weeks and then come back mid-September for a year (to Sept 2011).

At this point I don’t think I’ll be able to come home at all because it’s quite expensive and I don’t have a lot of time off. I think I’ll use my time off to visit Cities in England or to visit some people who I met while at Spring School here at Capernwray. One of my roommates lives pretty close by so I can go visit her. Another one lives in Denmark and is hoping to come visit me at school in December (because that is when I will most likely be homesick we think:))! There are offers in Scotland by the two people from Scotland. I don’t think I’ll have a shortage of places to visit whether to see people or just English charm.

I’m so excited for this journey and next year of my life. As I’ve said, each year for the past few years have had a “theme”. It started with healing (2008), then learning (2009), and currently adventure (2010). I think next year is a year of service (2011) as I give my time investing here for a year. I know that God will teach me a lot through this time as well. I felt God telling me really recently that next year is going to be big. I’m not sure what that means or what it looks like but I felt God put that on my heart. I am praying that God would equip and prepare me for what is ahead. I am excited about living a year with simplicity, learning to live while trusting God and away from the temptations of Orange County (gossip, turning wants into needs, etc.). It’s going to be a year with God, away from my comforts of home and family, to continue the work God is doing in me – I’m a work in progress and always will be. What I’ve gone through before was to prepare me for where I am now, so that I can be ready for where God will take me next.

Sunburns and spray-on deodorant

Last week we had 75-80 deg weather! Ridge held his last lecture outside in the sun, which resulted in a burnt part and neck (though nothing like a cali burn, just a little pink). We spent the few days of sun laying outside while reading and eating fruit – it was great. I busted out my sandals and rocked them for a few days as well.
A word about spray-on deodorant – it’s cold and shacking! They don’t have a lot of solid deodorant options so I decided to try a spray because a few of my roommates use it. My first experience was memorable. I had seen Steph (my British roommate) use it before so I just held out the can and sprayed. I was hit with a cold shot of air/spray on my armpit and was surrounded by a cloud of dove “citrus” sent – it was overwhelming and hilarious.

weather can be deceiving

Saturday...
what a beautiful day! I woke up and went on a run with my roomies. The sun was shinning and we did a jog/sprint down the road and back (about 30 minutes). We took showers and got ready for breakfast and I wore jeans and a tank top - it was that nice outside! It was so amazing. After, I talked to Mandy and a few of us decided to go see the waterfall that is close by (about 45 minutes away - once you know where it is).
So about 6 of us ventured off with directions for a fellow student. We cut across a few fields and continued on for an hour before we found the stream that would lead to the waterfall. The path along the water wasn't very clear and we had to make our own way stepping into long grass and plants and cross the water a few times (once I landed with my shoe in it, soaking my sock full of water (but it's better than the mud that filled Mandy's shoe). we nearly turned back before Mandy and Hannah ran ahead to see if they could find it (we'd been looking for an hour and a half). We ended up being really close so at their whistle, we continued up to find a cute small but beautiful waterfall.
We spent some time enjoying it, climbing the rocks and exploring the area before we felt the sprinkles. Luckily I had changed into crummy jeans and a sweater (but the sweater falls apart in the rain, leaving black fuzz on anything in it's path (especially my hands).
The beautiful sunny day had turned into a down pour that we walked in all the way back (only 45 minutes) as it increased in intensity, we increased our laughter at the situation. Our hair was dripping, clothes socking wet and our spirits high, finding much joy in God's sense humor. I might have complained a few times but in all honestly it made the area beautiful and the memory unforgettable. Coming back my roommates couldn't contain their laughter and thus the joy from God was spread...at my expense - but that's okay!
Best part, I decided to wash my towels that day and I put all of them in the wash before I left and they hadn't made it into the dryer so I had wet towels, wet hair, wet clothes and soggy shoes - I have pictures, don't worry!
The lesson was learned, the weather is so unpredictable and I need to remember to bring a sweatshirt and umbrella (though I discouraged others on bringing one - go me!) anytime I venture out in England.
My love to you all,
Nat

the food

The food…
…since the days run together there is no point in noting what day but the meals themselves are worth mentioning.
Meat pie: this should be have a sub-line, “looks can be deceiving” because it looked cute in a little pie crust (they were all individual) but the were stuffed with “some kind of meat” – by the way they use that phrase about once a day here and it’s not reassuring for those of us who aren’t too keen on meat when we know what it is. So, I have committed to trying everything, even just a bite, so I did. Spicy meat in a pie crust cannot be considered dinner. It was so bad I struggled to swallow but the best part is that I was sitting next to Dave, from Scotland, who eats mince pies a lot and loves them – so he ate four and I had one bite of a half and called it a night…so grateful for the yogurts I bought! Along with this mystery pie we had baked beans, salad, ginger cookies (though not good ones), and some tea...healthy dinner:)

Steak pie: for the record, putting random meat in a pie-crust doesn’t taste good so don’t do it or add a few other things so it’s interesting (and so I can pick around the meat). Lunch today was pieces of steak (leftover from a really good meal a few days ago) that they put in a pie-crust (must be an English thing). Along with that we had green beans and something orange and square (so I just ate it and didn’t ask) and some potatoes (good but trying not to eat a ton of these but when your options are meat in a pie-crust, what can I do? Ps the vegetarian option for the day was ground beef in a sauce, in a pie-crust – so beef in whole pieces or ground…take your pick (I chose the box of cookies in Mandy’s room).

Tuna Casserole: It’s basically tuna with pasta in a red sauce…yum. According to “head chief” Joel, I am the pickiest eater but in my defense, tuna surprise is nasty. It’s not like our tuna at home is like stanky-smelly fish that is wet and gross. So I complained to Joel about the Tuna Casserole, only to be corrected that it’s called “tuna bake” – call it whatever you want joel, it’s still tuna grossness with pasta and red sauce. Vegi option was curry pasta (John, not sure how you did curry for three months) and so after I talked my way out of this, he gave me vegi pasta, which was actually good.

Best meal so far: We had rice and beef in a great sauce with salad and some pita bread (but a really good, fancy one). Lemon Meringue for dessert – though it was a bit too lemony for me. A few of us ate outside in the beautiful sunshine (but I forgot I had a kitchen duty so I had to leave everyone in a hurry and I also had to leave a great conversation on diseases, prayer and God’s will in this – it was truly interesting.
Then, dinner was baked potato with chives, cheese and tomatoes along with salad and flap jack for dessert – sweet flat baked goodness of butter, brown sugar, and syrup – so good!
A word about the small of Capernwray: normally it smells like sheep poop because we are surrounded by fields of it (and sheep and cute little lambs) but today they were fertilizing – and let me tell you, cow poop is way worse here than anywhere else I have ever smelt it – wow! It filled the whole area including the buildings because we had some windows open. After a bit you get used it – sounds weird but when it’s the only thing going up your noise, you do. So that was the smell of my afternoon.

Bible College

So I have decided not to blog as often as I tried when I was traveling. My goal is once a week but I will see how it goes. I feel God would want me to experience this and give Him my time. I will share some of the amazing things but a lot will be internal processing.

So in a few short days we have dug straight into lectures and studying the bible - what an amazing experience. Each day we have 6 classes: 4 in the morning and 2 after dinner. We get 3 hours of free time in the afternoon after lunch and then an hour and a half after lectures at night. We are limited on internet access which has been very freeing.

So life is good, God is Great and I am loving England.
Prayer requests:
1. God to give me direction for my future
2. To be smart with my time here and to stay focused
3. For those still missing and hopefully coming!
4. For our Kenya team to be able to fly out next Friday as planned
5. For God to do a work in all our lives here (as he has been doing).

My love to all,
Natalie

Past 2 days in Scotland

We woke up and got showers – always a good start to the day. Shane slept in until the last minute as he still isn’t fully adjusted or caught up on sleep. We ate breakfast and the boys met us at the hostel. We left for the Castle and went in to see all it had to offer. I bought an audio tour so that we could know about the different sights. I loved the old Church and the stories around it. It was built by David I and named after his mother, who later died in the Church of broken heart after learning of her husband being killed in war. Josh climbed into a cannon, I have this documented on video, and didn’t think he was doing anything wrong because the sign said don’t climb “on” the canon, not in it – only Josh. We got pretty tired after walking around the castle for a few hours so we decided to head back to the hostel and have lunch before going further.

After lunch we walked down to the train station to see about tickets to Carnforth for Saturday and for Stirling Castle on Friday. We bought our tickets to Carnforth, saving a bit of money by buying them in advance, and decided against pre-purchasing our Stirling tickets. From there we walked up the hill and stopped in a store so Bruce could get a hat (he bought a beanie) and I got a little animal for Bodi – it’s the lockness Monster in red-plaid.

After this we parted from the boys and planned to re-connect around 7:45 for dinner then to the ghost tour at 9 p.m. I got to skype with mom and Sarah at their lunchtime and was able to catch up on emails too. Mandy and I got to sneak away for our daily girl-time which usually involved tea and we also tried some amazing cookies. We only got about 30 minutes but it was fun. We also were able to Skype with Courtney G. which was so nice! We are so bummed that her flight is likely delayed and she might not get to the school until Monday. It was good to talk to her in general though and both Mandy and I can’t wait for her to join us on our girl-times.

Dinner was really good and the prices were even better! They have a cheaper menu for people staying in our hostel so I got a full plate of food for £3 – baked potato with salsa (not SoCal salsa but that’s ok), beans, and a salad. They also have live music so we are going to go back for dinner and music on Friday. We ate dinner and also got two different orders of fried Haggis with different sauces. It is good but knowing or thinking about what is in it kills it for me. I have tried it though so that is good.

After dinner we walked to starbucks to get warm drinks before beginning our ghost tour. The tour was fun and pretty informative. The boys scared Mandy about 4 times between them but didn’t try anything on me – granted I was in charge of making sandwiches and I am Shane’s bank for larger purchases (I have the Credit Card). We learned a lot of things about the town; some interesting, some a little creepy. At the end of it we received a free beer – Shane and Mandy’s first. Shane drank about half of it and Mandy had about 4 sips of hers. I had wine but none of us were in the mood for any of it so we didn’t finish and just went back to the hostel. I got on the computer and waited to see if my mom would get on – which she did – and we were able to talk for about an hour and a half. During that time my grandma called and I got to briefly talk to her as well as say hi to my grandpa (though he couldn’t hear me through the phone and computer). Mom and I got some much needed mother-daughter talk time which I was so grateful for since it has been a month since we had that – just us. Shane interrupted briefly when he heard me talking about him but that was fun . I waited for dad to get home and was able to quickly say hi to him before going to be (it was 2 a.m. my time). I also got to see my little B, who I hear has been naughty without Shane and I there. He is not happy about us leaving and after hearing my voice through the computer the other day with dad, he went out and dug a hole in the backyard (and yet, I will still give him a toy because he is my baby).

Hayley sent me a video of her and baby Logan, just for me. He is the cutest baby and it has been so special to see these videos. I can’t wait to meet him in 3 months! He is going to be so big but still little enough (the four month mark is my fav so I am really grateful for that). I am going to have to buy him a little kilt because it’s too cute. We can pass it around the three of us girls for our boys, if we have boys, in the future but Logan will be the first little one to show his international side.

April 16, 2010
After a good night’s sleep where I only had to wake Shane up once for his snoring, I got up and ready for the day. Josh called to say that he and Bruce were going to skip Stirling and so the three of us ate breakfast, packed lunch, checked email and headed out. We stopped on our way to get postcards and then went to the train station. As I was walking down the steps I saw a watch shop and stopped to get a new batter, which came with a lifetime warranty (in case it dies while I am in Scotland again). Then off to get our tickets and get on the train.
We made it to the platform but got confused by the trains. I stepped off to check the front of it, leaving Mandy and Shane on, and when I returned they were stuck on the train. The doors weren’t opening and so we had to get someone on board to let them off. That was the wrong train. Ours pulled in moments later and we asked, to make sure we had the right one this time, and then got on and grabbed a table to play cards and face each other. The ride to Stirling was quick and we talked, played speed and looked out at the sights. Once in Stirling we headed to what we thought was the castle, but was actually the Wallace memorial, until turning back to find some tourist signs which lead us to a map and eventually up to the castle. Along the way we found a cute small park area were we ate our lunch. Around the Castle was a large cemetery with great views of the town, hills and Stirling castle. We got some good pictures before continuing up the hill. We took pictures with the statue of Bruce and talked about spiritual warfare and prayer – good topic!
On our way back down the hill we hit the gift store where I found a tea-towel for the Scott clan and a stamp for Miller which is very cool. After paying I found the funniest mug, a kilt and two legs coming out of it. I had to buy it and so I went back to the front for my final purchase. Mandy found a cute little Lockness stuffed animal for her niece – it’s seriously cute – and then we were off to get Shane and head back.
On the train we had a fun run-in with a large bumble bee (two actually). That was a bummer but we all survived to tell about it. Just such a weird thing to have on a train. Mandy and Shane played cards while I caught up on my blog. After we got off the train we did some shopping before getting back to the hostel around 5 p.m. Shane took a nap while Mandy and I went and had our daily girl-time over tea then dressed cute for dinner.

Dinner was at the same place and we all enjoyed it, and the price. After we sat at Starbucks drinking coffee while Josh told us about Capernwray: what to expect, how to prepare, etc. We parted ways around 10 and I packed and then got to skype with Erin for about 30 minutes - so fun! We just laughed like usual and caught up a little on life.

Courtney's flight is delayed because of the volcano in Iceland so that is a real bummer but she's is being so positive about it. We can't wait to see her!!!

Tomorrow we go to school where the internet will be limited so not sure how much blog time I will have but pray for good connection:)
My love to all,
Nat

Shane is here!

Shane is here:)
Tuesday we packed all our luggage and left it at the hostel (so we could be ready to grab it and get Shane on our way to the hotel by the airport). We went straight to The Tower of London which we all really enjoyed. We say a ton of different things like history of the tower, crown jeweles (good stories from here) and the armor museum. It took us about 2+ hours (I think) to see it and after we grabed some sandwiches and coffee from this cute little local coffee shop, Starbucks. It was very good - I recommend it!

Then off to Westminster Abbey where we got free audio tours with admission (do you like how they phrase that) which made the experience even more interesting. We spent about an hour wondering on our own listening to the guide as we went. There were some beautiful parts of this massive church but unfortunetly we weren't allowed to take pictures.

After that we jammed back to the hostel to get our luggage and then on the tube to get Shane. I was so anxious because we didn't leave our station until 3:50, which is when Shane landed, and it takes an hour to get to the terminal. Cell phones don't work on the tube either so I was even more nervous that Shane would be sitting at the airport trying to figure out why I wasn't answering (that is the big sis in me). At last, we made it and I left my luggage with Bruce, Mandy and Josh and ran to the arrival gate where I waited about 10 minutes for him to come through (It was 5 p.m. and I am so grateful that he didn't have to wait). I pulled out my camera to take a picture but was too busy crying to actually take one. I was so happy to see him. We caught up on our way to meet Bruce, Mandy and Josh back at the tube station where we continued to get a taxi to our hotel.

We did a quick check in and then off to the tube station to ride it for an hour into the City - worth it though. I bought a jacket at H&M since mine was too big to come with Shane. Then we ate at O'Neil's where we all got burgers and the four of us nearly finished off a bottle of ketchup - can you say "Americans"?! We stood out for sure. We were so hungry though that we hardly cared.

An hour back on the train where Mandy and I talked the whole way. I feel like God lead that conversation because we got a little closer and realized how the Lord had been working in both our lives leading us here, to Bible School in England - a dream come true. The time flew by for us but the boys were very quiet and Shane feel asleep (not surprising as he didn't sleep on the plane ride over. We finally got to our hotel around 11:30 and off to bed around 12:30 for my room - we were talking, packing and drinking tea (mandy and I have a tradition of tea at night - it's so good!).

The alarms and wake up call came all too soon at 4:30 a.m. and none of us moved fast enough as we all snoozed our alarms for an extra 5 or 10 precious moments. Then up and dressed to meet Josh and Bruce at 5 p.m. It was a quick taxi ride and we were there. Check in was almost smooth except for Josh getting in trouble for trying to check Mandy's bag - he was escorted over to Mandy and they asked who the owner of the bag was. So, lesson, don't check a friends bag - they have to check it (Mandy has two bags to check so to avoid any fees that they might charge Josh just took it to check in). We got some coffee/juice/water and muffins at the airport, boarded and were off to Scotland. I was alseep before we took off and couldn't believe how quick that flight was:).

Scotland is so beautiful. We did a free walking tour today that lasted 3 hours. We learned our way around as well as some fun history and town stories. We nearly froze before we made it back to the hostel for some rest. Shane slept for about 2 hours and Mandy and I caught up on the computer (we didn't have internet for much time in London). Before Shane slept we were able to Skype with dad - so fun! I took a snapshot of him and the video was fuzzy - very funny - and sent it to mom at work. She was so bummed that she had just missed us but hopefully we can connect with her soon!

After resting we went out for dinner. Mandy and I had Salmon (Grandma, can you believe it!) which was really good. Shane and Josh had a burger but neither enjoyed it very much. Bruce tried a local favorite (I forget the name but it starts with an "H"). After dinner we called it a night. I re-packed with Shane so that all my stuff is in the large suitcase and he has the smaller one (with the busted wheel) and the duffle. I gave him some nyquil and he was listening to music last I checked.

I am off to bed now as I need to get some sleep! Don't have to get up until 9 p.m. though so hurray for that!

My love to you all,
Nat Marie

London and Oxford...Mandy and I are in love with this place

First of all i am so glad to have a girl traveling with me! We are having so much fun and loving London. They boys are enjoying it too and they go wherever we tell them we are going - and we all are interested in seeing the same things so that is good.
Today we went to Oxford. Mandy and I found the street where the couple from the book "Severe Mercy" lived but we later found out that their studio burnt down in the 70s - we were both so bummed (the boys could care less but enjoyed laughing at our quest to find and see what the couple saw)! We sat in the in pub where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien would have their Tuesday lunches. It is called "The Eagle and The Child" , but the locals call it "The Bird and The Baby". So cool (Ps Mandy please correct any of the mistakes I am making in here - boys, i do not give you the same permission:))!
Then we walked the walk from the characters in the book - past Trinity College (Sarah, were your classes here???), down Queen's Lane to Magdalen College - where Lewis taught at and the church where he was converted. We also did Adison's Walk which was beautiful.
We ate lunch at "CoCo's" - it was actually called "Cafe CoCo's" - and we had some amazing pizza! I think it beats Germany but Josh said his didn't. Mandy and I tried blood pudding and as Mandy was eating it, Josh told her it was dried blood and she nearly lost her stomach. Later we found out it does actually have dried blood in it and we both are sick thinking about it.
We walk more of the City and down to Christ's Church, which was huge! The dining hall at the college nearby is where the inspiration for the harry Potter dinning hall comes from so that was pretty neat.
We then headed back on the train to London. I slept the entire time but we all slept on the train at some point. We made it back and Mandy and I ran upstairs to change before the play - Les Mis - and were back down by 6. We got dinner at Costa Coffee Shop and then headed accross the streat to see the play. It was amazing! We loved every minute of it. It reminded me of when I saw it in LA a few years back - both great expereince and different as well. This was a smaller theater but the actors did great! It reminded me how much I enjoy the theatre and how I want to go more often - Mandy and I made a pact to this when we get back and are financially stable again :).
Now we are sitting the the cafe at the hostel, sipping English tea with milk and both ready for bed.
Tomorrow, we sleep in then see more London sights then get Shane!!!
Love to all,
Nat

quick update

london is amazing! we are having so much fun. We got to the hostel last night around 11 p.m. and then Mandy and i got food from the cafe in the hostel and ended up talking until 1 a.m. We went straight up stairs to go to bed but i found a nice shock when my bed (assigned by the front desk) had a person in it. i reached on the side to get something and someone's foot moved - yikes! i rand to Mandy to tell her because it freaked me out (the room is dark because we didn't turn on the light considering the time.
All was fine though and we made it to sleep fast. we got up early (a little too early because i didn't change my alarm clock from France time to English time) but went to breakfast before the crouds and then took showers. Mandy's towel is in the bag that the airline lost (though coming tomorrow) so she had to use paper towels to dry off - pretty bad but a good story now.
We then went to a church, the one that hillsong music is from, and then met up with the boys after to walk London and see the sights. we took a break for dinner then off for some great night shots.
tomorrow is Oxford and then a play at night!!
Tuesday is more london and shane comes in!!!
Wednesday is Scotland, can't wait!
times up so love to all,
nat

Day 22...three weeks in and 6 countries down

so again i have to be quick and excuse the typos because being quick on a German keyboard is tuff!
we had so much fun today. We went down the Rhine (which is North) on the train to a town called St. Goar. We hiked up to their castle ruins and did the RS (Rick Steve's) tour. It was so cool. Their old prisons where these dark dungeons that they would drop people into from the top - so horrible! The bathroom was also worth mentioning (i don't have an obsession but they are so different here). so for the guys the urinal flush was a guillotine so you had to be sure to be done before you flush. for the girls, there is a window right behind the toilet and you pull down on this thing to flush it - ps i checked and you could see into the bathroom from outside but you would have to know to look because it was somewhat stain-glass looking. then the water for the sink you have to pump the water - super fun! there is pics of the toilet and i think josh got some of the guys.

so after the tour we went out down the hill a little to a lookout with benches where we ate our picnic - the famous peanut butter and bread - and then read for a bit. we walked down the hill to the town to the local store and into their small church. the town had so much history it was fun. we were searching for this mermaid statue the whole time though so we went back to the TI and she told us it was on the other side of the river further South (we would have gone North). We decided to skip it because it was far past the town and walking on the highway with their driving skills isn't worth the risk. But we splurged on the boat ride back - so much better than the train - and we were able to read more out of RS book about the different sights. We got 5 euros off for being students so it was onlz 2 euros more than the train would have been (too bad we didn't know this morning but i guess we got to see it from two different ways). on the boat we found the story of the mermaid - sarah u will love it! it is so funny but i don't have time to tell it now.

We took pics on the boat and laughed as we froze. Josh got a good pic of me power-walkng to get a picture and also with my tourbook and camera (staple for the trip). i got a good one of him "on a boat" - with a castle in the back - it's a good one.

I got ice-cream at the local shop and it was so good - i will also be having some for dessert. we are eating out tonight and we are both so happy about that! I am getting the famous beef with potato dumplings (not sure but RS said to try it and it is better than peanut butter and bread which was last nights dinner) and josh is having the Schnitzel (german dish). then more ice-cream and then packing for our departure tomorrow.

time is up so my love to all and my whole-hearted thanks to God for these three weeks in Europe - the experiences and lessons - and for being able to talk to Courtney on FB today - great timing and much needed.
ciao!

Thursday on the Rhine

I have to be quick because i am on a timed internet and spent most of my time reading about Courtney's Uganda trip, looking at her pictures and checking my emails.
On Tuesday we went to Strasbourg in France for the night. It was a cute little French town - Josh doesn't like the French but I love them! I got some tea-towels for 3 euros (one for you and me, mom). We found some pretty great historic sights and took great photos.
Yesterday we came to Bacharach on the Rhine and are staying at a cute B&B. It is really relaxing and we saw the whole city in about 2 hours today. Tomorrow we'll go up the Rhine on a day trip to St. Goar and then across the River to see a statue of a mermaid (that's all we know about it - sarah, i'm sending you a postcard about it :)). that should take most of the day, then back here for dinner out and to sleep.
Friday we will fly out to London to meet Josh's Dad, his mom is sick and can't come, and Mandy! Then we have four days in London (shane comes in on Tuesday) then we all go to Scotland for 3 nights. That will end our travels and we will be off to school to learn about God's word!
We've had fun but i think we are both tired of traveling. my rolling suitcase no longer rolls because the wheel broke, so that has been a bummer!
The place we are staying in is owned by Mrs. Doubtfire - she is so nice and very welcoming. She makes great home-made jam too!
That's about all i have time for.
miss and love you all,
Nat

Easter round two

Today:
We woke up at our leisure which was so nice! It was about 9:30 I think and we came out and had breakfast with the family. Then we got ready quickly to go visit a famous town, Tubingen, with Sarah's cousin as our tour guide. She brought her German to English book so she could give us all the details and check on the words she didn't know - but she did an impressive job and was so nice to take us around. The town is where her school (University) is. So we walked the town, took pictures, learned about it and then finished with dessert in a local shop. Then we went to the Ritter Sport chocolate factory but couldn't go in because they were closed for Easter Monday. In Germany they celebrate Easter on Sunday and Monday. Then we left and went home to celebrate Easter with Anita's (Sarah's mom) family. We had dessert and coffee, then played games inside and outside and then enoyed another great meal with their family. I learned a few German phrases to be able to introduce myself to their family and to wish their cousin a happy birthday. That was pretty fun and David, Sarah's little brother, is super patient with me:)

We left around 8:30 and came back to their house where we are staying one more night because the train to our next destination wouldn't have arrived until 9 p.m. and it was a little too late to go into the town so Anita encouraged us to stay - and we are so happy to be here again.

Tomorrow we will have brunch with Sarah and a few of her friends at 9:30 then leave for the train at 11. I am very glad to have one more night in the most comfortable bed, warm house, and sweet family. The Lord, again and again, provides for us as we go along this trip.

Recap:
Quick recap on the days I missed. Friday we went to Rothenburg (because Salzburg was full) and we both loved it. It was so quaint and we had the best pizza in Europe so far! I had mushroom and onion, Josh stayed consistant with Salami.
The town was closed down mostly for Holy Friday (good friday) but we got up early Saturday to do a little shopping :)
We had seperate rooms and were both so excited about that. It may seem silly but after sharing rooms with people in hostels and even just being together so much having our own space was a nice break.

I can't remember if I gave info for Saturday but basically Sarah met us at the station and then we went shopping with her and her friend and brother. we went to her house and found towels, soap and lotion on our beds and water bottles with glasses by them at night. we had an amaying meal and talked with her family at dinner for 2.5 hours. Rebecca, her sister, made cookies so we walked in to the smell of "home" and have just been loving it ever since.

I'm really tired now so goodnight and hope to blog from Strasbourg tomorrow.
my love to all :)

Day 17...Stuttgards and an Easter to remember

Happy Easter - not for bunnies but time with family to remember that on the 3rd day Jesus rose, providing the way for us to be saved. He is so good!
This was an Easter I will never forget. Not because I wasn't at home but because God used a family in Germany to shower blessings beyond explanation or words on me and Josh. They not only opened up their house to us, giving up their beds (the two sisters are sleeping in the attic/game room for us), but they took us in and made us feel like we were part of their family. They spoke English for us (because we don't speak German - but the brother, David, is trying to teach me though I'm pretty sure he's having me say weird things because he laughs every time I repeat after him).
Thanks be to the Lord for paving the way for us to share in celebration of his Son in a different culture and different way.

The day...
So we woke up early, 5:00 a.m., to get ready and be at the "Youth Service" - Sunrise service as we'd call it - but we were late and had to stand outside. It was a little bit cold but kind of a neat experience in itself. We made it inside about half way through to stand in the back (in front of people) and share in some worship songs (some were in English, most in German) and then take communion. We also heard the Lord's Prayer in German (I mouthed it in English as everyone else said it out-loud in German together).

We left and came back "home" to crawl into bed and sleep for another 3 hours (we were up until 12 the first night we got in so after only 5 hours of sleep the extra 3 was much appreciated!). We woke to breakfast made by Sarah, her sister and brother - it was delicious and included yogurt, fruit, bread and jams, juice and tea, and salami (which Josh ate - shocked?).

Then we showered and got ready for the day. It's traditional for families to eat a big lunch on Sundays after church so we ate what tasted like a pot-roast - but better - with noodles and some kind of purple vegi that was good too. the whole mean was incredible and it was followed by a latte and chocolate (usually dessert but for Easter they eat dessert with their big family).

(I have to be quick because they are watching a movie so here are the fast hightlights to hopefully expand on later):
Bike-ride through the town, dessert and coffee with their family, present hunt for the kids (they showered Josh and I with gifts of chocolate and other fun things), tossing football outside (monkey in the middle), then games inside, grandma gave me a tea-towel of Easter because she knew I collected them, dinner (toast, ham, pineapple and cheese), more card and board games, good-byes to the family and telling them how amazing the day was for us and how blessed we felt.
Back at the house to enjoy coffee/tea and cookies (I'm sure to have gained all my weight back after this trip - in cookies alone:)). Then talked to my grammy and family on their phone because they have free international calls.

Great day and now off to watch a movie with the girls, their friends and Josh :)

Dinner in Salzburg #2

Quick update on dinner

After last night's vegi pizza I wanted to try something different. There was spaghetti with meat sauce (and we all know how I feel about that) or fried things with fries. So I debated between a different pizza and the pasta which sounded great but the meat situation was holding me back. So, at the encouragement of Josh, I picked pasta. It was really good actually. I didn't eat any of the big meat chunks and there was so much sause left over I could have had seconds on the pasta but all together it was good. It came with a salad too - lettuce (whole pieces, not many were broken up), corn, carrot shavings and black beans (odd how excited I was about black beans and how good they tasted). I'm so used to Mexican food that the slightest bit of that tastes so good to me (e.g. the black beans). the two dressing options were yogurt or 1000 Island so take a guess which one i chose.

Josh had the salami Pizza - looks like pepperoni and he said it was really good. There was something green on it - looked like peppers at first and then like green beans. He said he couldn't tell what it was but ate it anyway - he's good about that.

I splurged on tea from the machine in the computer room but turns out it comes sweet with a little lemon flavor in it. Not bad just different from how I usually drink it - plain, no sugar.

Looking forward to big breakfast tomorrow before our train.

Off to sleep now...Night

Day 14...Salzburg

Today was fun and mellow. We woke early and enjoyed our buffet breakfast at the hostel for 3 euros (Hot Tea was my favorite part!). We then got ready and prepared for Rick Steve's walking tour of Salzburg. Since our room was warm and stuffy (our roommates don't like the windows open - they close them when we leave them open) we thought we'd be fine without jackets. So I had on pants, a tank and sweater along with my Toms (slip on shoes) and josh had a t-shirt and jeans. We made it about 45 minutes before we headed back for jackets (and scarf, hat and boots for me). Off we were again to continue our journey. We made it to all the sites - climbing the castle (but didn't go in), visiting the old main street and all the plazas. We went into the bakery by the old watermill and both had two fresh, warm rolls (so good!). I bought a t-shirt and tea-towel to count as a souvenir and then continued our walk. Josh tried a sausage from a little place Rick Steve's book recommended; I had a slice of pizza - much better today! It had prosciutto, mushrooms, olives and peppers (it was pretty good). Josh also tried the supposed best ice-cream shop - he said it was good. We ended our walk at Mozart's birthplace but decided not to go in.

We headed back to the hostel as it began to rain. We walked through the famous garden where part of "Sound of Music" was filmed. We didn't take the movie tour but maybe one day I will. I think it would have been really fun but I do have to leave some things for when I come back and travel Europe again.

We watched two episodes of "Curb" and then went to the train station to get our plan set for Rothenburg tomorrow. We couldn't tell if the guy helping us spoke english or liked us because he kept correcting us and staring at us but not typing anything into the computer. We were so confused until I showed him the book and then he printed out our itinerary for tomorrow. Most places we'd ask if they speak English but everyone here does so usually I just ask my question and see what happens. Maybe he was insulted. Regardless, we got our plan for tomorrow and also our train into Stuttgard for Saturday so we're all set on that.

Back at the hostel we dried off from our train walk in the rain. We booked our flight to London and the hotel leaving just the Rhine as our only unbooked plans (we need Sarah to help us on Saturday because she speaks German). After that was all done, Josh stayed to be on the computer and I re-packed now that all my clean laundry was done. We were able to skype Mandy and talk to her for a bit (she leaves in a week!).

Now we're off to dinner at the hostel again and Josh will be watching the Soccer game at 8 p.m. (so we better jam on dinner). I might watch the Sound of Music because I'm in Slazburg and that's what they do here at the Hostel :).

Tomorrow Rothenburg, Saturday and Sunday Stuttgard, then Rhine River and London - it's going by fast.

Keep us in prayer for easy travels tomorrow.

My love to all,
Nat

Day 13

We left beautiful Interlocken (Switzerland) today on the 6:30 a.m. train out. The sky was dark and the moon was changing places with the sun so the sky looked blue, the alps looked blue with light blue snow, and the water was reflecting all of this beauty. It was calm and peaceful. We were tired but it was a good way to get out of their early enough to make it here, Salzburg (Austia) at a decent hour without changing a bunch of trains. We only have to changes and both were right away. We arrived in Salzburg at 2:30 and were all checked into our hostel by 3:15. God provided big time for us as online they were all booked for tomorrow night but upon arriving and requesting a second night they had just 2 beds available (at least that is what I think they said).

The train ride for me was very peaceful. I was able to finish the last Rock Harbor podcast I had started on Wealth and Hell - it was so good it brought me to tears. I followed it with the next one from March 21. It was a nice time to just spend reflecting on God's Word and what he is doing in my life here. I've been on the search for a direction from God over these four months and it's not unfolding quite as I expected, but does God ever do as we expect Him to, no and we're probably wrong to think that way (or should I say, I am wrong to expect anything). So I've been reflecting and talking to Him and they things He is bringing up in me is so interesting. No direction yet but He's definitely unpacking my head and it's a lot. Not sure if that will make sense to all but in sum please be praying that God continues to draw near and speak to me through this trip.

Back to travels...so we got to the hostel, got in our rooms (it's a four person room - so nice after the 8 and 15-bed dorms we've had lately). We have one roomate but haven't met him/her yet. This hostel reminds me of the first hostel I ever stayed at when I was 13 (I think we were in Oxford). The hotel is very clean and very American - so nice to hear English!!! We took showers, had a snack and then hit the town a bit. I was in charge of the map this time as I spent an hour relaxing at the hostel reading the self-guided walking tour (Josh was on the computer). We just went down to the gardens from "Sound of Music" and then to find Mozart's house because we'll be going there tomorrow. We found the supermarket and got a few snacks for the next few days and dessert for tonight.

Once back at the hostel I started laundry. Let me tell you clean laundry is the second best feeling when traveling and needed a little bit of "home". Sounds funny but I needed clean laundry to help get me going again (the blow-dryer helped last week). I only have one load left, whites, and I might save it because it's not totally necessary (plus Shane will be here in 2 weeks with more clothes!).

Dinner was interesting. We ate here at the hostel in the bar. Josh got has something that was battered and fried and it came with fries (I can't remember the name); I had a vegetarian pizza. Let me tell you what that means in Austria. A vegi pizza has corn, black olives, broccoli and baby carrots with a little sprinkle of cheese. It was ok for what I thought when I first saw it but after four slices I changed to just eating the crusts because it stopped tasting good (or maybe I just wasn't starving anymore). So America is still #1 in pizza so far. this one was cheap though at 5.5 euros. Not bad considering we had the same size last night for 19 SF.

We changed our travel plans a little bit but are both looking forward to it. We are going to stay in Salzburg two nights then go to Rothenburg (a medieval walled City in Germany). After that we go to Josh's friend Sarah's house for two nights (including Easter) and then we'll go to the Rhine river in Germany. We're not going to Berlin anymore but are going to fly to London early (on April 8). It was a lot of re-working on the plans but I think this will be fun.

We are both looking forward to tomorrow and our little walking tour. The garden we saw today is so beautiful we're going to maybe read for a bit there too. The day should be full of fun sights, sound of music and souvenir shopping and Mozart history.
We are also very excited about the all-you-can-eat breakfast for 3 euros at the hostel - they won't know what hit them with Josh :).

Love to all,
Nat

Photos uploaded

I have discovered that uploading through the blog takes such a long time it's easier just to put them on Facebook. I'm going to try to attach one picture to this entry - it's the one of me in Venice eating Gelato. How old do I look - Josh said 13. What do you think?
Ps this is the purse I bought in Florence in the Market :)

Day in the Alps (or technically just below the Alps)

We woke at our leisure today and took showers (always a good start to the day). I almost had a crisis when my blow-dryer plug didn't fit (it's a European plug but it wasn't working). I had to connect all my adapters to get the euro plug in one end and also be at the other end but finally success!

We went to get breakfast at the store - our favorite place for breakfast, lunch and dinner! After getting our food (yogurt with granola for me, milk for josh and we shared some waffles and bananas) we walked the "mall" the store was in. As we went upstairs we found that there is a much bigger store so we ate and then went in for some shopping. Our greatest success was finding peanut butter! Now we have lunch on the train tomorrow and I ate some today for lunch as well. We also got some Swiss Choc to try and a few other things.

We decided to get all of our "errands" done so we went to the post office and I shipped some of the extra luggage stuff, as well as some gifts, to Capernwray so that I don't have to cart them around for another 2 1/2 weeks. It was only 21 SF (about $20). Well worth it to give me more room! Then off to the train station to find out about our tickets to Salzburg tomorrow. We discovered early on in our travels that the Eurorail pass doesn't include reserved seats so we sometimes have to pay extra for that. Today it was just 5 SF each which wasn't too bad. We have to leave early, 6:30 a.m. and we have to change trains twice (once in Bern and once in Zurich) but after Zurich at 8:40 a.m. we go directly to Salzburg and get in early at 2 p.m.

We got our hostel for tomorrow too - they only have one night so pray God opens a space so we can stay in Salzburg 2 nights. We are excited to see this cute little touristy town - me for the Sound of Music and oldest restaurant (around 800 AD), Josh for Mozart's history (his house and residence).

So after getting everything arranged we jumped on the train towards Bern to see what cute little town we could find along the way (I'd seen one when we came in). We found it and ended up walking to a medieval looking building/church/house/hotel (we're not sure) which was right on the water - it was beautiful! We sat on the grounds for a little bit looking at the water and taking it all in before beginning our hike back up the hill to the train station. We got back to town and went in the room to rest. I haven't been feeling well today and so I took a nap while Josh was able to connect with friends from Capernwray. We discovered that while we're in Germany for Easter there will be 4 other people from Capernwray staying with Sarah too. Having a place for Easter is such a blessing.

We went out for pizza, still on our hunt to find the best in the world. It was ok tonight. Not enough cheese and they shred the ham so it doesn't feel filling. It was also the most expensive at 19 SF (about $19) so we split it. So far America has the best (by far) but I'm not giving up hope. Italy was good but it was thin crust and very rich. It was inexpensive at 7 euros each.

So now we're downstairs in the bar/restaurant (the hostel is above a restaurant/bar). They are playing/we are watching the Manchester United vs. Bayern football (american - soccer) game. We are splurging on tea and coffee (I miss my tea) trying to spend out last 10 SF since tomorrow we will be back to Euros for Austria.

Our spirits are good. Josh enjoyed talking to friends today and I got emails from the family after our skpye session yesterday - it's so encouraging. At dinner Josh and I discussed how difficult traveling can be especially the way we did it - traveling 7 different countries (right now we've been to 5). The second traveling session will be much more efficient and have less travel time which will be good. We are both looking forward to being in a house with a family.

Pray for patience, strength, good health and fun times.
Missing everyone but loving the adventure God has me on.
My love to all,
Nat
